Melissa, the Mercury, and I, stranded in the desert at 10 at night. Always the optimist, she took a selfie to send her sister while we waited for a tow truck.

The site is dedicated to my wife, Melissa Catherine Milloy, and our son, Matthew James Piotrowski. My intentions with this site are to document the process of grieving the untimely loss of both Melissa and Matt. My hope is that it will help inform others going through similar pain, and give all who loved Melly a place to come to remember her.

Melissa is my best friend and love of my life. She was the light of my life. Matt was our hope and joy. To lose them both has left me a ship without a rudder. This is a place to gather and remember them. I have set up all of my blog posts to allow comments. I promise I will read them all and do my best to respond. If you would like to contact me directly please feel free to drop me a line anytime at

One of the most common question I get is 'how can I help?' First, thank you. Second, please visit some or all of Melissa's favorite charities and consider donating. Here is a short list of the causes that were close to her heart:

Defenders of Wildlife: - dedicated to protecting plants and animals native to North America in their natural habitats. In particular, Melissa was a big supporter of their effort to protect native wolf populations.

Southwest Wildlife Conservation: - SWCC rescues native wild animals that have lost their homes to development, or are found injured, orphaned, or abandoned. When possible, the animals in their care are rehabilitated and released, healthy and wild, back to where they belong. They are local to Phoenix. This is a charity Melissa knew well and visited personally.

ASPCA: - The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Reservation Animal Rescue:… - dedicated to providing resources for care and rescue of homeless animals on American Indian reservations.

Alley Cat Allies: - Advocating trap-neuter-return as a method of reducing feral cat populations.

US Humane Society: - National and local animal protection agencies, providing care and services to more than 100,000 animals every year.

Finally, about the name "Melissa Among the Wolves". Melissa's favorite animal was the wolf. She took animal protection personally, making it her life's mission to reduce animal suffering, cruelty, hunger, and possible extinction. Something about wolves spoke very personally to her. If we each have a spirit animal, I'd like to think hers was the wolf. At home in nature, majestic and free.

Like wolves, death is mysterious, scary, and misunderstood. But it is a part of life that can also be beautiful and inspiring. By imagining my Melissa among the wolves, I am choosing to recognize, confront, and accept the mystery and wonder that she brought to all of us.

With peace, love, and understanding,

George Piotrowski
