Melissa Catherine Milloy, 40, of Phoenix passed away suddenly on Tuesday July 5. Melissa was beloved by her many friends, family, and students.
Melissa was born in Cheverly, MD and grew up in Budd Lake and Belle Mead, NJ. She attended Montgomery High School and was a stand out cross country runner. Melissa attended Virginia Tech, where she originally majored in Organic Chemistry before transferring to English.
After a short stay in Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico, Melissa moved to Arizona in 1997 to pursue her masters in English at Arizona State. Her studies there focused on the influence of nature in our lives and wilderness as a literary character.
Melissa met her husband, George Piotrowski of Flagstaff, AZ, while at ASU in 2001. They were married in Sedona in 2005 and lived in Tempe, then later central Phoenix. Melissa and George were expecting their first child, a son to be named Matthew James, this December.
Melissa taught English at Mesa Community College and started a private tutoring company to help her students prepare for college. She loved all animals, nature, and her family and friends very much.
She is survived by her husband George, her father Jim Milloy of Basking Ridge, NJ, mother and step-father Linda and Allan Sager of Tracys Landing, MD, her grandmother Dorothy Carroll of Upper Marlboro, MD, her sister and brother-in-law Kelly and Tim Gray of Medway, MA, and six wonderful nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration of her life will take place at 11am Saturday July 16 at All Care Mortuary Garden Chapel, 1541 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ. The family is requesting that instead of flowers, please donate in her name to the animal charity of your choice.
